The APTA Oregon Continuing
Education Committee is excited to announce an upcoming virtual education o
pportunity June 25 - 26, 2021 entitled, What's New in Cerebral
Palsy?
Course Description
This course will contain f
our two-hour segments: Early Detection and Intervention of CP, Hypotonia, S
tanders, and Assisted Stepping. All content will focus on the newest evide
nce-based practice patterns for children who are non-ambulatory (GMFCS IV a
nd V). We will start by reviewing the International Guidelines for Early D
etection and Intervention. We will look at the F-Words and the evidence be
hind the shift from disability t enablement. During the second session we
will look at the AACPDM Hypotonia Care pathway and review all of the eviden
ce-based intervention for Hypotonia using a case story approach. The third
session will be an update on the evidence for standing programs with a foc
us on abduction and weight-bearing. The last segment will be about support
ed stepping and it’s affect on muscle and n bone health across the lifespan
s as well as its impact on and participation. We will look at the evidenc
e for gait trainers, support walkers and dynamic mobility devices as well a
s the options available and how to match those with the individual student’
s needs.

idence based interventions for children with hypotonia.

ipants will be able to design a standing program to address a specific ICF
based goal.
4. Participants will be able to describe the differen
ces between a gait trainer, support walker and dynamic mobility device.
Guest Speaker: Ginny Paleg
, PT, MPT, DScPT
Ginny Paleg is a pediatric physioth
erapist from Silver Spring, Maryland, USA. For the past 17 years, she has
worked with children aged 0-3 years in homes and childcare. Ginny earned h
er master’s degree in physical therapy at Emory University and her DScPT at
the University of Maryland Baltimore. Ginny specializes in posture and
mobility assessment and interventions for children at GMFCS Levels IV and V
. She is certified in Prechtl General Movement Assessment (GMA) and the Ha
mmersmith Infant Neurological Exam (HINE) and trained in Routines Based Int
erventions (McMaster) and coaching (Sheldon and Rush). She has published o
ver 15 peer-reviewed journal articles on standing, gait trainers, and power
mobility. She is the lead author for the American Academy of Cerebral Pal
sy Hypotonia Care Pathway. She is the Incoming Chair of the AACPDM Communic
ations Committee (2021-2023). Her latest publications are a case study on a
child with “treated type 1 SMA” and a study on weight bearing in various p
ositions in 3 models of standers.
